Congressional Candidate Mayra Macías Urges Rep. Chuy García to Work to Rename District Post Office Following Disturbing Allegations Against Cesar Chavez
Macías Emphasizes Importance of Giving Chicago Community a Choice
Chicago, IL — Following a shocking investigation into allegations of years of sexual abuse by Cesar Chavez, Mayra Macías is urging outgoing-Representative Chuy García to immediately file a bill to rename a Pilsen post office that is currently dedicated to the late United Farm Workers leader. Because post offices are federal properties, they can only be renamed through an official act of Congress — to achieve this, Congressman García must introduce legislation to rename the building and call on Congress to hold a vote.
Macías, independent candidate for Illinois’s 4th Congressional District, is proposing that the facility be named instead in honor of a local leader that the Pilsen community decides upon.
In response to the recent reports, Macías released the following statement:
Our public spaces should reflect our community’s values and honor those who have authentically uplifted our people. The revelations about Cesar Chavez are deeply disturbing and painful, particularly for the Latino community that has long revered Chavez and his legacy. We cannot ignore these allegations. I am urging Representative Chuy García to introduce legislation to remove Cesar Chavez’s name from the Pilsen post office and allow our community to decide on a new name to honor. Our community deserves a representative who is willing to have difficult conversations and stand up for what is right, even when it means challenging the icons of history.
